The neck, or cervical spine, supports and provides mobility for the head. It is made up of a network of nerves, bones, joints and muscles that also connect the brain to the spinal cord. Due to the neck’s proximity to and interaction with the back, its range of movement, and the masses of nerves and joints, neck pain is quite common and can be quite severe and debilitating.

Symptoms of Neck Pain

Neck pain can range from minor tweaks and twinges that are mildly irritating to extreme or chronic pain that can affect movement and range of motion and cause headaches or migraines.

The pain can be located in one spot or triggered by a particular motion or it can spread out across a broader area, affecting other areas of the body. This can result in accompanying back pain, shoulder or arm pain and headaches.

Neck pains can appear as muscle spasms, shock-like pains or tingling or numbness reaching down through the shoulders, arms and into the hands. It can also appear as stiffness or soreness that restricts the range of motion, especially when moving the head from side to side.

Common symptoms or signs of neck pain include:

  • Muscles spasms in the neck or back
  • Sharp or shock-like pains
  • General soreness or stiffness
  • Pain, tingling or numbness in the shoulder, arm or hand
  • Trouble gripping or lifting objects
  • Reflex, sensation or strength problems (in arms and hands)
  • Reduce motion in the neck, shoulders or arms
  • Headaches or migraines
  • Sleep problems

Common Causes of Neck Pain

There are a number of common causes of neck pain. Irritation of or damage to the nerves in the neck can lead to pain radiating from the neck down the shoulders, arms or hands, as well as headaches or migraines associated with neck problems.

Irritation or damage to the spinal cord around the neck can also lead to back and leg pain.

However, the most common causes of neck pain are muscle or tendon strains and ligament sprains. In most cases, these are minor problems that may heal on their own or require some treatment to speed up the process or alleviate the pain.

Common causes of neck problems include:

  • Poor posture
  • Awkward sleeping position
  • Repetitive movements
  • Trauma or injury
